"so i met this girl one night. i remember she beat me in pool, and then her band played. the next thing i know she is sitting on my porch while i mix the sangrias. night becomes morning and the conversation never hits that uncomfortable silence. against all odds, and across that sea we call a lake, our lives stay connected...random phonecalls like a flat stone skipping across the surface of our lives. things change, she steps out of the puddle of punk and indie rock that she had wet her feet in. and she walks for a while, alone. as time passes i hear the new songs: yes, they are acoustic, but there is power in them. not soft and pretty, they have the jagged, angular beauty of dissonance. the songs speak to me from far away, crackling with electricity over my phone as she plays and sings far out of my sight. months pass and her notebook fills and a train brings me to her. i hear those songs in person now, close enough to watch the vibration of the strings stir the smoke in the air. and the voice. her voice. there is no technology between us to muffle the lyrics and their meaning now. is it music or poetry or something else, i don't know. there is an album now, but in my heart i wonder if a piece of plastic can replicate watching a true songwriter engrossed in her craft."
